Abstract
Neuropathic arthropathy, or Charcot joint was first described by Jean-Martin Charcot in 1868 in patients with tabes dorsalis, but nowadays it is reported most frequently as a complication of diabetes. Diabetic neuroarthropathy is a destructive process, most commonly affecting joints of the foot and ankle. Neuroarthropathy arises typically in patients with peripheral polyneuropathy, and affected individuals present with swelling, warmth, and erythema, often without history of trauma. The calcaneal injury is relatively uncommon, but if treatment is inadequate, inappropriate or delayed, it remains long term sequelae. We describe the case of a neuropathic diabetic patient who presented with heel pain which precipitated the development of acute neuroarthropathy in the feet. This case describes clinical feature of neuroarthropathy of the calcaneus related to diabetics, and we emphasize that early diagnosis is imperative, followed by early treatment to prevent significant bony deformity.
